Up and Coming Country Destinations

iceland-01The Lonely Planet has developed a Top 10 list of countries they think might take over the spotlight in 2014.  As planners, we always want to present creativity to our clients and show them something unique.

Below is a list of the Top 10 countries that you might want to explore for your next corporate incentive or conference program.

1.    Sri Lanka

Best for: Culture, off the beaten track, value for money

With the civil war ending in 2009, investment is fuelling the tourism industry and the increasing number of travelers to this destination.  It is emerging as one of the world’s best-valued destinations.  Sri Lanka offers a number of 5-star hotels and resorts.  The possibilities are endless for unique and “once-in-a-lifetime” welcome and gala dinners as well as optional activities.

2. Montenegro

Best for: Activities, adventure, off the beaten track

This wild and rugged interior has an intense beauty.  A new, and steadily growing network of hiking and biking trails and improved infrastructure, is making this glorious quilt of nature more and more accessible.  A great option for those athletic groups that love to travel, this destination is one that not many other people can say they have been to.

 3. South Korea

Best for: Activities, events, off the beaten track

With South Korea hosting a number of major sporting events in 2013, travelers will begin to tap into this “so far quiet” marking on the map.  Great for those clients that love the outdoors and are willing to try something new!

 4. Ecuador

Best for: Food, off the beaten track, activities

Ecuador is radically revamping their railway system this year with new lines linking to the cosmopolitan areas as well as the coastal area and to the countries volcanoes.  This will make it easier to have your participants see a number of areas, both for business and pleasure to truly see what Ecuador has to offer.

5. Slovakia

Best for: Culture, adventure, off the beaten track

Slovakia is one of the continent’s fastest-growing economies.  It has joined the EU and ranks right up there in Google searches for bargain ski packages.  A great destination for those winter incentive programs!

6. Solomon Islands

Best for: Adventure, off the beaten track, activities

If you are looking for luxury resorts, this destination is not it.  This is a place you would take you’re your most adventurous employees, for an outdoor retreat in engaging eco-resorts, village homestays and some of the best scuba diving anywhere.

7. Iceland

Best for: Activities, off the beaten track, value for money

This little island nation is known for its mind-blowing scenery, its delicious food and its sincere local hospitality.  Its local currency is devalued, so this makes this destination much more affordable.

8. Turkey

Best for: Off the beaten path, culture, food

This is a country known for its beauty and undiscovered history.  The cultural crafts and merchandise are world-renowned. Watch out for that traffic though!

9. Dominican Republic

Best for: Activities, value for money, events

With the expanding number of airlines flying into many of the airports around the DR and cruise ships now using it as a port of call, it is becoming a popular destination.  It is a great spot for groups who want to meet and enjoy some sun and sand.  Offering many large 5-star resorts that can put some North American AV departments to same, it is a great and reasonably priced destination for groups of all sizes.

10. Madagascar

Best for: Activities, adventure, off the beaten track

For visitors, the time to go is now, before the country reappears in travel agents’ windows.  Be prepared to be overwhelmed: in both fauna and landscapes, the world’s fourth-biggest island is “otherworldly”.  To those seeking a place out of the ordinary, Madagascar cannot fail to delight.
